Getting started with card roguelikes

August 12, 2026 · Marek Dvořák

Card roguelikes like Deckbound Heroes scare off a lot of players because the early losses feel random. They're not. They're a tutorial you don't realize you're taking.

The first rule is to keep your deck small. New players grab every card offered, which dilutes the deck so you rarely draw your best plays. Skip cards that don't fit a plan. A lean deck beats a bloated one almost every time.

Pay attention to synergies. Two cards that seem weak alone can combo into something that wins fights on their own. Half the joy is spotting those pairs, and you'll only spot them by experimenting across many runs.

Finally, don't treat a lost run as wasted. Every failure teaches you an enemy pattern or a card interaction. By my tenth run of Deckbound Heroes I was losing on purpose to test ideas. That's when it really opened up.
