Can strategy games really work with touch?
Strategy on a phone sounds like a bad idea. Tiny units, fat fingers, panicked tapping. For years I avoided the genre on mobile for exactly that reason.
Iron Tide Tactics changed my mind. The trick is designing around the touchscreen instead of fighting it. Big tap targets, a radial menu for commands, and crucially a slow-time option that lets you breathe during a chaotic raid.
The games that fail are the ones ported straight from desktop with tiny buttons. The ones that succeed rethink the whole interface. When a developer accepts that a phone is not a mouse, good things happen.
My tip: look for strategy games that let you pause or slow time. That single feature separates the ones built for mobile from the ones that just happen to run on it.
